The head of the regional health department in North Lombok, Dr. H. Benny Nugroho, credits the National Program for Community Empowerment for Rural Areas (PNPM-Rural) for reducing the rate of malnutrition in children under five years old. The rate has been low for the last three years.
According to Nugroho, PNPM Generasi Sehat dan Cerdas (GSC) has helped the regional government in lowering the rate of malnutrition. GSC targets include poverty, health, and education.
He mentions several activities implemented between 2011 and 2013, including an empowerment program that has motivated housewives, and the establishment of Posyandu, the Integrated Health Posts. Children were regularly brought to Posyandu and their weights were monitored as well as their intake of food and vitamins.
PNPM has also equipped Posyandu with a play area to attract more visitors.
Nugroho says that as of mid 2013 the number of children with malnutrition number less than 25 in the entire area. There were 500 children identified with malnutrition in 2012. They have all been receiving treatment.
