PNPM Green

Background

PNPM Green is an innovative project introduced by the Government of Indonesia to address environmental sustainability outcomes under PNPM Rural.  The program adapts the PNPM-Rural program delivery model to achieve improvements in the utilization of natural resources by rural communities.  This is achieved through (i) mainstreaming natural resource management issues in the community-driven development planning process, (ii) increasing environmental awareness and related management capacity of communities and government stakeholders, and (iii) the disbursement of block grants to fund environmentally supportive ‘green’ projects at the sub-district and district level.

Communities work with facilitators and civil society organizations ( http://www.owt.or.id/ and http://desakuhijau.org)  to allocate block grant funds to responded to the immediate needs of communities for protection and restoration of essential ecosystem services (such as watershed, trees to prevent erosion and landslides, etc) and the provision of sustainable services (sustainable income generating activities and renewable electricity).

PNPM Green is funded through a combination of funds from members of the multi-donor PNPM Support Facility (PSF). PNPM Green is implemented by the Ministry of Home Affairs (KemenDagri), Directorate General for Community Empowerment (PMD).
